10 Things to Know Before Your First Bridal Appointment
Helpful guidance from the bridal experts at Rebecca’s Wedding Boutique in Louisville, KY.

Congrats - you're getting married! Whether your engagement has been filled with happy tears, excited conversations, or those little moments when it suddenly feels real, this is such a beautiful chapter of your love story. Our team at Rebecca’s is so excited for you!
And now, it's time to find your wedding dress! If you're wondering when to start shopping, what to bring, or whether you're supposed to know exactly what you want: you're in the right place. After celebrating brides in Louisville since 1989, we've learned a thing or two about finding “the one.”
Here are ten things our bridal stylists want you to know before your first wedding dress appointment.
1. Start Wedding Dress Shopping 9–12 Months Before Your Wedding
We recommend starting your wedding dress shopping about 9–12 months before your wedding, when possible. Most special-order wedding dresses take approximately 4–6 months to arrive from the designer, and you'll want to allow around two additional months for alterations.
But your timeline doesn't have to look exactly like everyone else's! If your wedding is coming up sooner, there are still many options for you to get your dream dress in time for your big day. Many designers offer rush delivery, and off-the-rack wedding dresses can often be purchased and taken home the same day. We've helped brides find their dresses with only a few months, weeks, or even days before their weddings. Your stylist can help you explore options that work with your timeline.
And if you're shopping well in advance? There's no rule that says you have to wait to fall in love with your dream dress!

2. You Don't Need to Have Your Whole Wedding Planned to Find Your Dress
You can absolutely start wedding dress shopping before you've chosen your venue, decor, or every detail of your wedding day.
Knowing your wedding date, venue, and season can be helpful, but sometimes all you need is a feeling. Our own Master Bridal Stylist Morgan started shopping with a wedding date and a vision of Old Hollywood glamour. She found her dress first, then chose her venue and decor to complement the feeling she loved.
Maybe you're picturing a romantic garden celebration, a grand entrance, or dancing the night away with your favorite people. Even if you haven't settled on the details, those little pieces of inspiration give your stylist something wonderful to work with. If your wedding date is still undecided, we'll also help you understand how ordering timelines and off-the-rack options might fit into your plans.
3. You Don't Need to Know Exactly What Wedding Dress You Want

You don't need to know your favorite wedding dress silhouette, fabric, or designer before your first bridal appointment. Your bridal stylist is there to help you discover what you love!
At Rebecca's, we start by getting to know you, your style, and how you want to feel on your wedding day. Then, we'll introduce you to different silhouettes, fabrics, details, and styling possibilities.
A few things that help along the way:
Share what catches your eye. Even if your inspiration photos look completely different from one another.
Be open to a wildcard. Sometimes trying something unexpected helps you discover what you love.
Tell us how you feel. Love the neckline but not the skirt? Tell us! Every reaction helps your stylist understand your vision.
And remember, you won't hurt our feelings if you don't love a dress. We're here to find the one that makes you happy!
4. Set a Wedding Dress Budget That Feels Right for You
Start with a number you feel comfortable spending. Your wedding dress should be something you love, at a price you feel great about.
If someone else is contributing to your dress, it's helpful to discuss the budget together before your appointment. Remember to consider the other elements of your bridal look, too, including alterations, veils & accessories, taxes, and any applicable customization or rush shipping fees.
At Rebecca's Wedding Boutique, our general wedding dress price range is $1,300 to 3,500, with the majority of gowns priced between $1,500 and $2,500. We also offer sale and off-the-rack wedding dresses below that range, along with couture gowns at higher price points.
One of the most helpful things you can tell your stylist is whether your budget is for the dress alone or your entire bridal look. That way, we can focus on dresses you'll feel wonderful saying yes to, in every way.
5. Your Bridal Stylist Is Here to Guide You and Celebrate With You
Your first bridal appointment is all about getting to know you and discovering what makes you feel beautiful. At Rebecca's, you'll have your own private bridal fitting room and a dedicated stylist to guide you through the experience.
We'll start with a conversation about your wedding, your personal style, your budget, and anything you've been dreaming about. Then comes the fun part: exploring the dresses! Your stylist will help you select gowns to try on, assist you with getting dressed as much or as little as you're comfortable with, and explain how different fabrics, silhouettes, and structures fit.
You'll have time to share your thoughts, revisit favorites, ask questions, and enjoy the experience with the people you've brought along. You can take photos, celebrate the little moments, and discover something new about your bridal style along the way. And if you're shopping solo? Your stylist will be right there celebrating with you!

6. A Few Simple Things Can Help You Prepare for Your Bridal Appointment
You don't need to arrive with a suitcase of bridal accessories! A few simple things can help you feel comfortable and make the most of your appointment.
Full-coverage underwear: We ask brides to wear full-coverage underwear, preferably in a shade close to their skin tone.
Wedding shoes: If you've already chosen them, or have shoes with a similar heel height, bring them along. They can be helpful when considering a custom hem length.
Inspiration photos: Pinterest boards, saved dresses on Instagram, or even a few images that capture your wedding's overall feeling are welcome.
Shapewear: If you're considering wearing it on your wedding day, feel free to bring it. Many of our wedding gowns already have built-in structure and support, so shapewear is completely optional.
Meaningful accessories: Have a family veil or another special piece you'd love to incorporate? We'd love to see it!
Most importantly, just bring an open mind. Your stylist will help with the rest!
7. You Deserve to Feel Beautiful and Supported in Every Size
You deserve to feel welcomed, comfortable, and celebrated as you explore wedding dresses, regardless of what size you wear! At Rebecca's, we carry wedding dress samples across a wide range of sizes, including an extensive plus size wedding dress collection. of over 100 gowns in store that are size 16 - 24.
Remember that when you are trying on dresses, you are trying on wedding dress sample gowns that aren't always your exact size (and that's completely normal!) During your appointment, your stylist may use clips or other fitting techniques to help you see how a sample's silhouette and details could look when fitted to you. Our stylists understand bridal sizing, structure, and support. They'll explain how a dress fits, what adjustments may be possible, and what to expect when ordering and altering your gown.
If sizing is something you've been thinking about, you're always welcome to share your questions with us before your visit. We're here to listen and help you feel confident about your appointment.

8. Bring the People Who Make You Feel Most Like Yourself
The most important things to bring to your bridal appointment aren't actually things at all - they're your people! Finding your wedding dress can become one of your favorite memories as a bride, and sharing that moment with people who love you can make it even sweeter.
Think about who makes you feel comfortable being yourself, who understands your style, and who will celebrate alongside you. That might be your mom, your sibling, your best friend, your chosen family, or someone who has been cheering on your love story from the beginning. You can also come on your own! There's no perfect guest list for a bridal appointment.
At Rebecca's, our standard appointments are best suited for smaller groups. If you're bringing six or more guests, we recommend a VIP bridal appointment, which offers a more spacious suite and a few extra celebratory touches.

9. You Can Find Your Wedding Dress at Your First Appointment
Sometimes the first appointment is where everything comes together! You may have heard stories about brides visiting several boutiques or trying on dozens of dresses before finding the one. That's one way to find your dress, but it doesn't have to be your way. There's no required number of gowns to try on or stores to visit before saying yes.
If you find a dress you love, take a moment to enjoy it. Ask yourself how you feel wearing it, whether you can picture yourself on your wedding day, and whether there's anything else you'd like to know before making your decision. If you have questions, your stylist is there to help you explore them.
And if you feel ready to say yes, you can celebrate that feeling! Your wedding dress shopping story gets to be your own.
10. Your “Yes!” Moment Will Look and Feel Like You
Here's a little secret from your bridal fairy godmothers: not every bride cries when she finds her dress! Some brides have happy tears. Some can't stop smiling. Others feel a wonderful sense of certainty, or suddenly picture themselves walking toward their person on their wedding day. There isn't one right way to feel.

Pay attention to what you love about the dress and how you feel wearing it. Try walking, sitting, moving, and imagining the moments you'll share on your wedding day. Maybe it's the way the dress moves, a detail that feels especially you, or simply the feeling that you don't want to take it off. Your stylist can help you talk through those feelings and answer any remaining questions.
After helping brides find their wedding dresses since 1989, we've learned that every yes is a little different. And that's what makes each one so special.
